Responsibilities of student
  • Attend school every day that you are required to be there
  • Arrive on time for every class
  • Give information to the teacher from their parent when you have been away
  • Stay at school all day unless you have adult permission to leave
  • Talk with the teachers to catch up on essential work you have missed through absence
  • Work with the school to improve your attendance if your attendance has been inconsistent

Sometimes students find it difficult to come to school. Does this sound like you?

"In year 9 I was sick a lot of the time, so I missed out on a lot of the work.....sometimes it was a sore stomach, different stuff...when I came back, I didn't know as much as what the others had learned so far."

"Usually there's nothing to do at school. You walk around with no-one to talk to, 'cause they're all playing basketball and stuff. So if you go to the computer room, and Matt and Clive have got jobs to do, you've got something to do. It's a pretty good connection because we talk. When ever we get the chance, we sit down and have a talk, find out what's been happening around and what their weekend was like and general conversation."

" I never wanted to go to school, I don't know why. Like, it started off that I was sick so I wouldn't come because I was sick but then I'd come back to school for a day or so and then I'd go home again. the more I was home the more the workload built up, the more stressed I got and the more I didn't want to come."

What is Your Attendance Rate?

100% This means that you attend school every day and every lesson
95% This means you are absent for the equivalent of 10 days per year
90% This means that you are absent for the equivalent of one day per fortnight and a total of 20 days per year
85% This means that you are absent for the equivalent of 30 days per year
80% This means that you are absent for the equivalent of one day per week and 40 days per year
Less than 80% This means that you are absent for more than 40 days each year and are missing almost the equivalent of one term of learning

Remember missed days from school mean that you have missed out on valuable opportunities for learning and for connecting with your peers. Students who attend regularly are the ones that go on to get good outcomes in their learning and gain tertiary and work placements.
