English as a Second Language

 

There are 74 primary and secondary schools with English as a Second Language programs. 

 

In addition, there are Intensive English Language programs provided at Collingwood English 
Language School, Broadmeadows English Language Centre, Brunswick English Language Centre and at the following outposts:

English as a Second Language and Victorian Essential Learning Standards

The English as a Second Language Companion to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards provides a framework for assessing student achievement. In general, the progress of ESL students should be recorded using these standards rather than the English standards.

 

The ESL Handbook

This is a valuable resource in determining and addressing the learning needs of ESL students.

 

Support and Professional Learning

Information on professional development can be provided by the ESL Project Officers. This includes a certificate course for mainstream teachers, staff meetings and curriculum days. Assistance with ESL teaching strategies, classroom demonstrations and advice on assessment and reporting can also be provided. Additional professional development can be sought through

LMERC Lending Library

Languages and Multicultural Education Resource Centre (LMERC) is a specialist resource centre for schools.

 

Foundation House

Foundation House provides support for refugees and assylum seekers who have experiences trauma prior to their arrival in Australia.

 

Supporting Refugee Students
