Term Four Wrap Around News

Term 4 promised to be an all out cracker with so many activities and performances taking place, everyone was working at a frenetic pace. Once again my fellow colleagues you didn’t disappoint.

The students appreciate the time and effort that teachers are still putting in to their music classes and performances and make it their business to tell me on my visits to their schools. Over the last 6 weeks I’ve been in a wonderful position to pass on to 4 schools woodwind and string instruments which were given to me by The Song Room.

This wonderful organisation who works in so many of our schools handed over instruments that I could pass onto our primary and secondary schools. The criterion for this was based on surveys that I had received from schools [which all schools received last year] the schools needs and the music curriculum that these instruments would be used for. The schools that received the instruments were Gladstone Park SC, Gladstone Park PS, Lakeside SC and Pascoe Vale Girls College. I was delighted to present the schools and their students with the instruments and I know that they will make a huge difference to their programs in the future.

The Sunbury schools are to be complimented once again for staging their annual schools performances. Primary and secondary students performed at Kismet PS and it was clear to see that this event is important as parents, teachers, and students from so many schools in the area supported this wonderful day with so much enthusiasm and community spirit. I’m so happy to see so much and that’s why I urge schools and teachers to set up their own networks and ensure that the Arts has a strong presence in the community.

Pascoe Vale Girls set up a lunchtime performance every term and this allows the students to showcase their talents to their peers. It also allows the teachers to fine tune their teaching styles and skills because they can see what works and what needs improving. I was most impressed with the diverse musical items on display and also was most taken with the ease that these students perform. Well done and keep on showcasing the work.

Ken Own from Soundhouse and I are looking to run classes and Professional Development days in 2008. The days will allow for music teachers to convene and become informed with what’s going on in many areas of Music. We are currently booking in dates and the days content and will inform you all when this is done. I will also pass on other relevant dates when performances will take place to assist you with planning in 2008.

In closing the year has been one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable of my time as Music Coordinator and it has to do with the support and great vibes that so many teachers and students pass on to me. Your support and help has ensured that all the events were well represented and that we ensured that our students were able to perform and in many cases surpass our expectations. To everyone who came on board for the ride many thanks and to everyone, may you enjoy the festive season and may the break that you so richly deserve give you the strength to do it all again in 2008.

See you all in 2008

2007 Music and Music Careers Expo

Friday 17th and Saturday 18th August 2007 was another highlight for many students as they performed and participated in the NMR Music and Music Careers Expo.

The Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre was the venue for this Expo and it was a great venue to hold such an important event. The Expo Concert was a massive hit and we unearthed some great talent and some real characters. It was great to see 12 schools perform and support each other in such a great way. The acts all featured something different and the audience got a real taste for what is being taught and performed at the different schools. To all the teachers who gave me so much support I thank you and wish you all the very best with the music that you promote and teach at your schools. It is because of your fantastic work that these types of events take place. The Expo weekend was an amazing event and it showcased so many things that are in our region. We should all be delighted knowing that we have the support of our Tafe Colleges and Universities, that we are supported by industry leaders such as` SAE. I am proud to know that schools such as Northland SC also supported the day along with community music groups like the Preston City Brass and Preston Orchestra and Preston Strings. The Expo showcased some amazing groups and it catered to a wide audience and I’m proud to have had this experience once again. I hope that this Expo will remain an annual event and that more schools and teachers will see the benefit of supporting the region with this Expo.

School of Rock - 2007

The School Of Rock concluded on the 22nd June at La Mirage and as the last act finished their set and the audience gathered the last musical equipment and the last bus left to return students to their school the Northern Region had seen the largest gathering at any musical performance. 1700 hundred students had sung, danced, performed and entertained over four days. The SOR will be remembered as one of the all time great musical extravaganza and I know that for many students one of their proudest moments in the lives. The buzz still remains with me as I’m still receiving from students, teachers and Principals the rave reviews that saw so many great performances and allowed so many students the opportunity to mix and mingle with so many great and talented artists. The chemistry between primary and secondary was just awesome with so many wonderful and complimentary comments being passed around, you couldn’t help but feel proud that we were all giving 100% on every day.

The teachers were so well prepared that every day things just ran so smoothly and we were able to start and finish on time and make sure that all the acts were able to perform with the minimum of fuss. The students really got into the spirit and supported and cheered and sang and assisted their fellow students which really consolidated the fact that the SOR was a great feel good event were everyone was a winner.

I must once again thank Billy Hydes for providing a great back line and drum kit, their support has continued and allowed us to perform with top quality equipment.

Also Gallins Guitars needs a very special mention as they allowed me to give away four SG Epihone electric guitars.

The schools who won these magnificent prizes were Lalor North PS. Montmorency PS, Roxburgh College and Pascoe Vale Girls College. On behalf of the Region we congratulate the schools and we thank Gallins for their generous support and commitment to this event, it is a testament to how important the SOR really is to the retailers and music stores in our Region. In closing I have attached to my words some of the photos taken and more importantly some of the statements sent to me as a way of summarizing the overall feelings and thoughts of the SOR 2007. The SOR DVD will soon be making its way to all schools in the Region and I hope that you will enjoy the DVD and see it as a valuable tool in promoting and encouraging students to perform to a new audience.
