Shared Resources

It may be that I have gathered a posie of other men's flowers, but the arrangement and the thread that bonds them are my own.
Michel de Montaigne 1533-1592

Thanks to all those who attended the Music Reference Group meeting on Wednesday, October 3rd, at Soundhouse. Thanks to Ken and all the staff at Soundhouse for making the day an enjoyable experience.

The 'Shared Resource' page of the website is a place where the NMR music educators share their ideas and resources related to music education.

We welcome your input!

Send us your ideas on any music topic of relevance, any written work, any proformas, web site links, resources of interest and the like .
Any other topics that you as a music teacher would feel would be appreciated by your peers and would be of interest would be great. Eg. School incursions, venues of interest, guest performers used, shows or DVD’s viewed, works created by students.

Music Websites
  • Musical Mysteries
A great website for exploring sounds. Help Robbie complete these fun musical games and activities. He needs to help his Grandpa find something important!

  • Drumsteps Beat Game
Drag and drop the ladders and red dots in the grid. Press play and listen. You need “Shockwave” to play this game.

  • Onion Street Music Mixers
Grade 5/6 classes have used the DJ mixing on this website in Music. Go to Music Mixers and have fun mixing different sounds – from drum loops and bass lines to Spanish and African mixes. This rocks! The Blast Music Game is also fun to try. You’ll find the link on the right hand side of the screen.

  • super duper music looper

  • Morton Subotnik’s music games
Compose music, play with musical performance, music games and music puzzles. Check out the Musical Sketch Pad – write your name or draw a picture and then listen to it! The Rhythm Band lets you make electronic drum sounds.

  • San Fran Symphony
A fantastic interactive website where you can look at the instruments of the orchestra and use the “composerizer” to make your own tune.

  • Music Notes
    An Interactive Online Musical Experience

  • Play Music
A wonderful resource from our American cousins, this time in NY

Amuse News

Amuse is working alongside many music and art teachers and is speaking to the VCAA. The main purpose is to pass on to performing Arts teachers as much material as possible regarding VELS and the Progression Points. This small paragraph highlights some of the points that are important and could assist teachers with their reports and assessment of students.

The key things to remember are:

  • they are not a checklist or a syllabus

  • they are illustrative not comprehensive

  • the published ones can be used by a school or network or a professional association as a model

  • they are not used to assess individual pieces of work

  • they are used to assist in making an on-balance judgment for the purposes of reporting.

UPDATE!!

We have just completed Singing as Essential Learning.

I still think it would be a good idea if we ran another session in February to cover assessment and reporting.

I think we all have a good grasp on pedagogy and curriculum planning.

Hope all is well with each of you.

More coming soon,

Kevin

Planning a School Production

So you’re preparing your schools concert and as always the stress levels and anxiety pangs seem to engulf you. Well here’s a list of some of the Do’s and Don’ts of Concert Preparation that I have prepared, based on my experience. I have taken into consideration that many teachers may not be music specialists. I have seen many performances where classroom teachers are responsible for the annual school concert. I hope that I address as many issues and concerns that music / performing arts and classroom teachers would find beneficial. This Timeline template may also be useful to you in planning your school production

Maree Frisby [Apollo Parkways] says 'Apollo Parkways Primary School whole school production involves all the students at the school and provides a major focus for the arts once every two years. This event has tremendous support from the staff and school community. I have been the producer of this event for the last ten years, and have documented the process'.

Maree hasn't just documented the process, she has done it in such a way that it provides an excellent template for you to create a plan of your own.

Starting a primary School Rock Band

Robbie Grieg has been the backbone of many NMR primary school Rock Bands for many years. Robbie has put together a great song repertoire for teachers and has also listed some very important ideas for sustaining school Rock Bands in his document, 'Starting a Primary School Rock Band'. Having seen many wonderful performances with his bands I am pleased that Robbie can share his ideas with you.

Says Robbie 'Thought it might be nice for people to hear some kids' work on the bulletin board. Here's an MP3 copy of our rock band Smash Hits' successful entry into the Gold 104 Primary Rock & Roll Competition - Down Under by Men At Work. Love to hear some work by other bands.'

Collaboration Across Departments

This 2 minute video really is wonderful, it demonstrates beautifully possibilities for collaboration between visual art, music and IT.

A great idea which could be replicated within the music, IT and art classroom even if this video is somewhat intricate.

Choir Songs That Work

Here's two pages of songs for choirs, submitted by Chris Kilmartin.
